Wishing Flags

gifts with intention

Wishes carry the power of intention, they are small yet profound acts of imagining a better world. With her vibrant flags, Fae gives voice to her dream of a brighter, more compassionate world for children. In her work, each wishing flag becomes a vessel for these intentions, turning silent hopes into visible, tangible forms.

Her art evokes the universal human desire for joy, healing, and connection. These symbols invite us to believe in the possibility of change, inspired by Tibetan prayer flags traditionally used to spread goodwill and blessings. In her version, she uses pieces of recycled fabrics to transform her art into flags representing symbols of hope for children around the world.

She wishes that a child’s day starts with carrying a book to school rather than a rock to a quarry. And that a child’s day ends nourished by a warm meal, bath and bed rather than overpowered by a sweaty man with a predatory zipper. And that a child can dream of a bright future rather than dread the nightmare of another enslaved day. Through her art, she not only raises awareness but also calls for action to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and trafficking.

Each Wishing Flag is a wish for healing, for freedom, for joy, and a gratitude for the gifts of her life and the urge to share them.

Fae’s love for art began in the 1970s on Martha’s Vineyard, where she found her passion for printmaking. She was captivated by monotypes, a technique that creates unique prints with a rich, painterly quality, which became a signature aspect of her work. Her desire to share her craft took her around the world, from leading community workshops to notable artist residencies such as the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow in 1995.

Back home, she was instrumental in establishing the Printmaking Studio at the Featherstone Center for the Arts, ensuring that artistic expression was accessible to everyone, and to this day, she is committed to teaching and encouraging others to discover their own creative potential.

The Wishing Flags are not only beautiful creations but also a force for good. Seventy percent of proceeds from their sales go to Media Voices for Children and the Kenyan Schoolhouse Program, which gives children access to education and a brighter future. They remind us that art is not just about self-expression but also about making a difference. Each flag carries a wish, a hope, a promise for a better world. Through her work, she invites us all to dream, act, and believe that change is possible.

In tumultuous times, Fae’s Wishing Flags serve as gentle reminders of our shared humanity. They ask us to pause, reflect, and take part in a collective vision of compassion, equity, and a world without child labor. Her work proves that art can be more than an aesthetic experience; it can be a movement, a message, and a call to action for unity through hope and creativity.
